Eller Makes A Commitment

Langley senior outfielder Chuck Eller entered this past baseball season with coaches raving about his ability. He just lacked the stats to back up the words. Then he put up the stats. Then he had colleges calling. And Friday he turned a stellar junior season into a scholarship.

Eller committed to Wofford College, which plays in the Southern Conference. He had considered VMI, Radford, North Carolina- Asheville and the Naval Academy. Eller was swayed in part by Wofford's facilities. The Terriers have a new facility, which the NFL's Carolina Panthers use in the offseason.

“The facilities are unbelievable,” Eller said. The speedy Eller batted .438 with three triples, 11 RBI and 12 stolen bases, also drawing raves for his defense. He earned first team All-Liberty District and All-Northern Region honors. He was second-team All-Journal. Eller's hitting made it tough on fielders, who also had to worry about his speed.

“You always have to be on your toes against someone like that,” Langley coach Jeff Ferrell said. Eller has started since his freshman season. He's the second Saxon to commit early: pitcher Jimmy Saris will play at Duke. “I was looking for an early decision so I could enjoy my senior year,” Eller said. “I'm glad to get this out of the way.”
