* The Langley Saxons (9-3, 4-2) were 2-1 last week. They defeated Lee, 3-0, Marshall, 11-8 in eight innings, and lost to W.T. Woodson, 8-5, after leading 4-0. Langley had 18 hits against Marshall as it rallied from a 6-3 deficit. Chuck Eller was 4 for 6 and Danny McLean, Nick Zahra and Adam Hoffer had three hits each. Jimmy Saris got the win in relief. Langley made five errors and Marshall four.
Saris threw a one-hitter against Lee and struck out seven. Russell Blankinship was 3 for 3 for Langley and drove in two runs. Saris also had an RBI. Saris (4-1) took the loss against Woodson and Hoffer and Eller were each 2 for 3.
* In the Oakton Cougars’ 11-1 victory over Chantilly last week, Preston Madden, Bryan Kidwell, John Marlette and Chris Despins all homered and Evan Frederickson tossed a three-hitter and fanned 10. Oakton (9-2, 3-1) also defeated Centreville, 5-1, last week as Kidwell was the winning pitcher and Madden and Matt Butler had two hits each and Jared Kubin drove in two runs.
* In the McLean Highlanders’ 10-3 victory over Fairfax last week, Jake Farmer belted a pair of homers and drove in four runs and Marshall Forest had a home run and four RBI. Billy Corey and JB Oldenburg had two hits each for McLean. Danny Mills (2-0) pitched a complete game to get the win. His brother Shane Mills pitched nine innings earlier last week in McLean’s 2-1 extra-inning win over South Lakes. Shane Mills (1-0) allowed one hit, did not walk a batter and fanned 10. Butch Bastable had two hits for McLean, and Oldenburg and Forest drove in the runs.
McLean (7-4, 4-2) also defeated Lee, 6-5, last week.
McLean began this week with as many district wins at it had last season and one victory short of matching its overall win total of 2003.
“This team is capable,” McLean coach Joe McDonald said. “We can swing the bats and score runs, so we’ll go as far as our pitching can take us. Our pitching has been good lately.”
* The Madison Warhawks (10-2, 5-1) began this week with a 10-game winning streak. Madison was 3-0 last week. It defeated Fairfax, 10-6, Lee, 5-4, and Marshall, 11-2.
Ray Sparrow singled home Nick Tomasetti with the winning run in the seventh inning against Lee, and Mark Riffee made a circus catch against the fence in right field in the bottom of the inning to end the game. Matt Riffee (4-2) homered and was the winning pitcher in relief, and Johnny Ayers had three hits and earned the save.
Matt Riffee was the winning pitcher as well against Marshall. He had two hits in that contest, Ayers was 3 for 4, Chris Wimmer was 2 for 4 and Spenser Sams homered and drove in three runs.
Madison began this week tied for first in the Liberty District with W.T. Woodson. Both had 5-1 records and were scheduled to play on Monday night.
