Sborz agrees to terms

Langley's Jay Sborz said he just needed to relax for a couple weeks and put his baseball future on hold. That accomplished, Sborz is ready to begin his professional baseball career.
Sborz has agreed to a contract with the Detroit Tigers for an estimated $860,000. The Tigers selected him with the 40th overall pick in last month's draft.
He'll leave for Detroit this morning, where he'll sign the contract and attend the Tigers' game against Toronto tonight. Then he'll report to Class A Lakeland (Fla.).
``This all went quickly and [the contract] was for the right amount,'' Sborz said. ``I can't wait to get started. I need to get started.''
Sborz was an All-Journal selection this spring after going 7-3 with three saves and a 0.68 ERA. He struck out 98 batters in 72 innings, allowing just 28 hits while throwing two no-hitters. He also batted .350 with six homers and 18 RBI.
The 6-foot-4 Sborz, armed with a 94-mph, biting fastball, hopes to quickly advance through the Tigers' system.
``I'll go when I'm ready to go,'' Sborz said. ``But I want it to be in three or four years. That's what I'm setting my goals toward.''
Sborz is the fifth ex-Northern Region player to agree to a deal this year. Asher Demme (South Lakes), Eddie Kim (Fairfax/James Madison), Jeremy Cleveland (Hayfield/North Carolina) and Marc Tugwell (West Springfield/Virginia Tech) already are playing in the minors after getting drafted in early June.
